About Monument Cloud

What exactly is Monument Cloud?

Monument Cloud is a privacy focused photo management system. It helps you back up and organize all of your photos without giving up your privacy. That means all of your photos and videos are protected and available only to you.

With its advanced AI software, Monument organizes your photos automatically by faces, scenery and other properties.

It's the secure way to store and manage your photos and videos in the cloud.

How is it different from Google Photos?

Google has taken control from you and uses your private data to serve you more ads. The more data they can collect, the better they can profile you.

Most users are either unaware of their personal information being used like this or fine with the trade-off.

We strive to build the best photo management solution by keeping your needs at the center while providing security and privacy.

Additionally, Monument offers more functionality to import and export your photos from other devices such as creating additional backups, importing from external drives by keeping the existing folder structure, exporting metadata and more.

If you want to dig into the details, you can read more on this page.

Why pay for my photos if I can get it free from Google?

Today, businesses collect, use, share, and sell consumer data to keep their services free. Users actually pay with their personal data which later can influence our choices and shape behavior according to advertisers' preferences.

Our photos reflect our private lives and they should not be a tool for companies to profit. We should decide what is being done with our personal information.

Also, if your photos are uploaded using the free plan, your photos lose their original quality and are downsized. Also, videos higher than 1080p are resized.

On the other hand, Monument helps you create additional backups to your computer or to your local storage without any additional fee so you can keep a copy of your data under your control.

Our goal at Monument is to keep your photos and videos safe, private and easy to manage -you have the full control on your own photos.

How is it different from iCloud?

Basically iCloud offers a synchronization service for all of your Apple devices rather than a personal storage for all of your devices. If you or anyone close to you uses an Android or Windows device, you're out of luck when it comes to sharing your storage plan. Also, you can not expand your storage capacity beyond the 2TB plan.

Monument makes it easy to backup and store all your memories from all your devices in one place while protecting your privacy. It helps you create additional backups to your computer or local storage with no extra fee. The 4TB storage plan will help you backup the photos of up to 5 family members.

What's the difference between Monument 2 and Monument Cloud?

Both Monument 2 and Monument Cloud run the Monument software which helps you back up and organize all of your photos and videos from all of your devices while protecting your privacy.

Monument 2 is a self hosted solution if you want to keep your data in a local storage. Monument Cloud eliminates the need of using a hardware device and keeps your data encrypted in the cloud.

I'm an existing Monument user. What does this mean for me?

You can continue using your Monument to have access to the same feature set.
If you prefer keeping your content fully encrypted on the cloud, instead of your own drive, then you can switch to Monument Cloud.

Can I share Monument Cloud with my family?

Yes, Monument Cloud is designed to share your storage with your family and friends. You can add up to 5 users to your storage plan.

How can I transfer my photos to Monument Cloud?

Just install the Monument app to your phone or computer and Monument will automatically back up all of your photos and videos, fully encrypted, in their original resolution. That's it.

Which devices can I install Monument Cloud?

Monument apps are available on iOS, Android, Mac, Linux and Windows. You can access and control your data using Monument apps.

Privacy and security

How is my data protected?

Monument uses end-to-end encryption to protect your uploaded content. Once they're backed up, all of your data is stored fully encrypted. This ensures security even if our systems are compromised.

How secure is it?

When you use Monument Cloud, all of your content is transmitted using end-to-end encryption and stored encrypted using a private key. Your data is secure, private and only available to you.

What user information do you keep on your servers?

We store only the data we need to authenticate you, and anonymous application logs to troubleshoot errors. Your photos and videos are fully encrypted and only you have the access.

Which infrastructure do you use for storage?

We utilize Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage for the storage.

Does Monument store my password?

Monument does not keep your password, only a secure key to authenticate you and a session key to process your content. Your photos and videos are stored fully encrypted and only you can open them with your own password. That means, even if our servers were hacked, none of your content can be viewed.

About Monument

Who is behind Monument?

Monument began life in 2016 by a group of engineers and designers after looking for an easy solution to back up and organize photos scattered across multiple hard drives and computers without giving up on privacy and security. After launching the product for pre-orders on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, we shipped our first generation product in 2017.

We are named as one of the Top 100 startups by Wired Magazine(UK). We are headquartered in Chicago.

Since the launch of the original Monument, we have been listening to the immense feedback from our community and improved the experience in every way. By introducing Monument Cloud, we're bringing even more features to provide a better photo management experience.

Today, Monument apps are loved by thousands of users (App Store rating: 4.0, Google Play rating: 3.7). We hope you'll like Monument Cloud too.

Where are you located?

We're headquartered in Chicago and located in 1871, the startup incubator in the historic Merchandise Mart Plaza.
